1. No sound in video (Issues in English)

Problem: I purchased 'Issues in English' some time ago. I have upgraded my computer to run Windows 98 (or NT or Me or 2000 or XP), and now there is no sound when I play a video.

Solution: You will need to upgrade your copy of 'Issues in English'. Cost is approximately A$50 plus p&p. Please contact your supplier or Protea Textware with proof of your original purchase.

2. I get an error message: "...requires Toolbook runtime system..."

Problem: I tried to start a Protea Textware program (or demonstration program) and I got an error message that the executable requires the Asymetrix Toolbook runtime system.

Solution: This problem may occur with some non-English versions of Windows (eg French, German, Danish...) when you try to start a program. You will need to download a patch to run on your computer. The patch will insert one line into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that your version of Windows can locate the required files.

3. I get an error message "Initialization failed. Not enough memory or the file is damaged."

Problem: Win2000 network: I installed a Protea program on a Win2000 network. The program runs fine when I start it as an Administrator. But when I tried to start it as a USER, I got this error message.

Solution: The program needs access to the Windows temp folder. Under Windows2000, when logged in as a "User", permissions to this folder are not allowed. You will need to upgrade your version of the program OR you can click below to view a Word document which explains how to change the USER permissions so that your program will start.

If you choose to upgrade your program, the cost is approximately A$50 plus p&p. Please contact your supplier with proof of your original purchase

Click here to download a pdf documentwhich explains how to change the USER permissions.

Problem: Win XP SP2: I installed a Protea program on a system running Windows XP SP2. But when I try to start it, I get this error message.

Solution: Win XP SP2 will delete the autoexec file needed for 16-bit support each time it reboots. To overcome this, download the autoexec.nt file, and copy it into the folder as follows:
c:\Windows\System32\autoexec.nt
When you have copied the file, right-click on the file, and select Properties. Then check the box for Read only.

Click to download autoexec.nt now.(2k)

4. CGEA CDROM won't start under Win2000 or later

Problem: I installed the CGEA cdrom on Windows 2000. I tried to start it but I got an error message and a dialog box to open a Toolbook file.

Solution: You will need to upgrade your copy of 'The CGEA CDROM'. Cost is approximately A$50 plus p&p. Please contact your supplier with proof of your original purchase.

5. I get a message "Do you want to enter your server install password now?

Problem: I installed one of your programs. When I start the program, I get a message saying the program cannot find the CDROM, and do I want to enter a password. I don't have a password, and the program exits.

Solution: The program must be able to find the sound and video files from the CDROM to run. If you have a single user licence, the CD must be in the CD drive of your computer before you try to start the program. In newer PCs, the CD drive is very fast, and may take several seconds to spin up to speed before your computer can 'read' the disk. Wait until the light on the CD drive stops flashing before you try to start the program. If this does not fix the problem, the disk may be dirty or scratched.

6. I have upgraded Windows on my computer. Will my program/s still work?

Problem: I have upgraded Windows since I purchased one of your programs. Will my old copy still work OK?

Solution: New releases of Windows can cause problems in running older versions of programs. The current version of all our programs is compatible with the current version of Windows. The version number of your program is printed on the face of the CD-ROM. In most cases, older versions of our programs will still run without problems on the latest versions of Windows. However, there are some exceptions. If any of the following apply to you, you can upgrade your version of the program. Cost is approximately A$50 plus p&p. Please contact your supplier with proof of your original purchase.
